A number of European nations have barred Russian airline companies from the airspaces as a response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Additionally, Reuters reported that according to an EU official, a continental ban on Russian airlines may be part of a larger set of sanctions against Moscow to be debated on Sunday by EU's Foreign Ministers, Visaoperations reports.

On the 24th of February, Russia attacked Ukraine, as per the President of Russia's directive, which he described as an attack in Ukraine was a "special action by the military" after months of growing tensions.

Nearby Countries Support Ukraine, Halt Russian Airlines from Their Airspace

Because of Russia's invasion into Ukraine, Poland, Romania, and Moldova put in place a ban for Russian airlines.

The decision of Poland was endorsed by Premier Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

"I have directed the creation of a resolution which will cause the closure of the airspace above Poland in the direction of Russian airliners," he pointed out in this regard.

Romania as well as Moldova have also placed limitations on Russian airlines.

Baltic Countries Unanimously Decide to impose a ban on Russian Airlines

The Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have been able to ban Russian airline companies from the airspaces According to officials in these countries, who have urged other states to adopt similar measures.

"We encourage all EU nations to join us in this effort. There is no room for planes from the aggressor state within the democratic skies. #StandWithUkraine" Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas made clear in this context.

The Latvian government has was joined by Lithuania and Estonia to shut down its airspace in cooperation with the two neighboring countries.

"Lithuania joins Latvia as well as Estonia in prohibiting Russian airplanes out of its airspace," Lithuanian Transport Minister Marius Skuodis said in this context.

Nordic Countries also impose bans for Russian Airlines

Finland, Denmark, and Sweden have also announced plans to block the airspace of their countries to Russian air traffic because of the situation that is currently in Ukraine.

Additionally, the authorities of Germany also announced that they would shut down their airspace to Russian aircraft in response to the Russian military's actions in Ukraine.

As per the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure of Germany, Transport Minister Volker Wissing "supports the blocking of German airspace to Russian planes" and also "ordered that everything be ready for this".

In addition, German airline Lufthansa canceled flights scheduled for Russia and emphasized that "flights which are within Russian airspace" will "leave it to return in the next few days" according to RT.

In addition to the mentioned countries, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Bulgaria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia have also barred Russian aircraft from airspace.

Russia also took similar steps and banned entry into Russian airspace any flights of airlines operating in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia, among others.
