Spain to Introduce Digital Nomad Visa

After the approval of the Spanish government, new measures will be implemented in Spain to attract digital nomads.

Many talented people from other nations would be eligible for the digital nomad visa to allow them to live and work in Spain, contributing to Spain’s economic sector. The digital nomad visa allows internationals from non-European Economic Area (EEA), as well as those who have EU passports or are arriving from Schengen Zone country to work remotely in Spain for less than six months without having to register.

The UK's transition period has ended and UK nationals are now non-EEA citizens. However, the Olive Press reports that the new measures will offer them a great opportunity. The Economy Ministry stated that such legislation was created to "attract, retain international and national talent by helping remote workers and digital nomads set up in Spain.

The Economic Minister announced that Nadia Calvino registration fees would be eliminated and that the process for creating a new company would be simplified. The Minister stated that startups are the foundation for the digital economy. They create highly skilled jobs and have a high potential for growth.

Spain's authorities have stated that the draft will be submitted to Parliament for approval. Other European countries offer digital nomad visas, which allow people from other countries to travel indefinitely. These permit individuals who are interested in certain fields, such as finance, marketing, or technology, to work in another country.

The digital nomad visa program was also announced by the Romanian authorities last month. Vlad Craioveanu (co-founder, Business Development Manager at Impact Hub Bucharest), stated that holders of Romania's virtual nomad visas will enjoy more benefits than those from other European countries and the US. The cost of living in the US is approximately 50% higher.

Craioveanu also stated that Romanian expenses average less than EUR500 per calendar month when compared with other countries.

Other than Spain and Romania, there are also other European countries with such schemes: Croatia, Estonia, Iceland, and Germany. The program is popular in other countries than the European Union. It is also popular in Costa Rica, Dubai and Bermuda.

Even though such a scheme exists in many European and non-European nations, the requirements for such permits vary.
