Portugal's Travel & Tourism Records Show a 85,000 Job Shortfall This Year

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, Portugal suffered a 19.6% drop in direct tourism and travel jobs between 2010 and 2020. This is a significant decrease from pre-pandemic levels.

WTTC's latest report, created in collaboration avec Oxford Economics, states that one out six jobs in this sector will not be filled due to labour shortages.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has imposed restrictions that only add to the current crisis in the labour market and hamper the sector's recovery.

Additionally, 92,000 workers in the country's tourism and travel sector lost their jobs last year. Unfortunately, the labour market will experience a further shortage of 53,000 workers. This is a 11% decrease in labour supply for 2022, which accounts for one in nine job losses in the sector.

The country's labour demand for the second half 2021 was at 475,000, with a shortfall 85,000. This accounts for 18%.

WTTC recommended other practices to help restore work amid COVID-19. These included facilitating mobility, remote work, providing safe work, and social safety nets. Upskilling and reckilling the workforce, creating and encouraging education, and retaining talent.

"At the moment, staff shortages are a major issue in the travel and tourism industry. While demand and supply will adjust slowly during 2022, this problem is likely to persist." The sector's recovery depends on its ability solve this problem and be able meet the returning demand ," WTTC reported in its report.

The global tourism and travel organization revealed previously that the EU's sector faced the greatest economic challenges last year. A 51.4 percent shortfall, which amounted to a EUR987 million loss, was noted. The Economic Trends Report also showed that Europe's domestic spending suffered a 48.4% shortfall , which was offset by some intra-regional traveling. International spending, however, fell by 63.8 percent.

Similar labour market shortages are evident in the majority of EU member countries. A 19.5 percent reduction in tourism jobs equates to 202,000 job loss in Spain. France lost 10.5 percent or 138,000 jobs, while Italy saw 215,000 jobs go. Italy suffered a 12.4% reduction.
