How to apply for a student visa in Lithuania

You will need a visa for student (Visa D), a temporary residence permit, and you must be a non-EU citizen to study in Lithuania.

Students from EU or EEA countries can freely enter Lithuania without visas. If your program is more than three months long, you will need to obtain a certificate from the Minister of Interior to confirm your right to reside in Lithuania.

A Lithuanian Visa D is typically priced at EUR80 ($94), and a residence permit costs an additional EUR28 ($33).

Steps to apply:

Here is a quick breakdown of the application process for a residence permit and visa D in Lithuania:

  • Accept a University Place: Get a formal Admissions Letter from your chosen institution. Also, pay any applicable enrollment fees.
  • Make a reservation for a visa appointment at a Lithuanian Embassy: A listing of official consulates and embassies in your country can be found here.
  • Print, complete, and return the Visa Application Form: Fill in all sections with current and accurate information.
  • Gather supporting documentation: It's important to order your supporting documents well in advance. The next section will provide a breakdown of the documents you'll need.
  • Make an appointment for your visa appointment. Before your application can be processed, you must submit your form and supporting documents in person.
  • Waiting for a decision: Usually, applications are processed within two weeks. However, complex cases can take up to six weeks. When you are allowed to collect your passport or visa, the consulate will inform you.
  • Register electronically for a temporary residence permit. Submit an initial residence permit application through the Lithuanian Migration information System (MIGRIS).
  • You must present your documents in person at the Lithuanian Embassy in your country. To be issued a residence permit, you will need to submit supporting documents and your biometric data. This must be completed within four months from the date of electronic registration.

Lithuania student visa processing time

Two weeks is the average processing time for visa applications. However, you can start the process up to six months prior to your travel date.

It is worth submitting your application quickly as delays can lead to a longer wait for your visa.

Your family can also travel to Lithuania.

Your family members who are EU, EEA, or EFTA citizens can visit Lithuania for up to 90 days without a visa. They may stay longer but will need to apply for permission and obtain an official certificate from the Minister of Interior.

Non-EU citizens must apply for a tourist visa and a temporary residence permit to be able to travel with you to study abroad.

Only very rare cases will allow for specific dependent visas for spouses and children. International students must have a temporary residence permit, and live in Lithuania for at most two years.

Is it possible to work in Lithuania with a student visa?

International students in Lithuania can work as much as 20 hours per week during term time, and full-time during university holidays.

These permissions will be granted automatically with your Visa D or residence permit. You won't have to apply for additional work permits.

What should you do if your Visa is denied?

A letter will be sent from the Lithuanian consulate explaining why your visa was denied. You can appeal within 14 days if you feel your application was denied unfairly or incorrectly.

Re-applications are possible at any time. However, you must fix any issues found in the original application. You will get the same negative result if you submit another application.
